Regarding to the Wonderland theme, I chose a book cover of the stop-motion animation based on the book "Coraline", with illustration made by Dave McKean, who is renowned artist. Related to my specialism, which is graphic design, I decided to pick book cover as the main piece of art that I think links directly to my subject as well as the 'Wonderland' theme. In this blog post I will provide the critical analysis of the chosen art work and answer to questions given.
1. What kind of IMPACT does their work have when you first see/ experience it?
The book cover of “Coraline” illustrated by David McKean has a striking and haunting impact when first seen. The artist’s unusual style, consisting of combination surrealism and darkness fantasies, establishes an atmosphere of mystery. The image of Coraline’s button-eyed face, surrounded by dark and unsettling details, captures the essence of the story’s gloomy atmosphere.
2. What do you like about the DESIGN of their work?
At the first place, I admire the visual compelling atmosphere of the illustration, the use of specific palette and color combinations that adds a mysterious and immersive touch to the work. I think the design successfully captures the story, making it visually intriguing and prompting curiosity about the content within the book.
3. What kind of ELEMENTS are used?
I think the main elements that captures the work at the first glance is surrealistic elements, creating a dreamlike quality. Also, the cover is rich in details, from the textures to the patterns in the background; the use of muted colors sets a mysterious and dark tone corresponding to the theme of the book.
4. How would you describe the COMPOSITION of their work?
The composition of this work I would describe as balanced, simple and harmonious. The thoughtful arrangement of these elements helped to create visually appealing and harmonious composition in the work.
5. How will you describe the MOOD of their work?
The mood created in illustration is a captivated blend of curiosity inviting readers into a world that is both enchanting and slightly unsettling.
6. Does the work include SPACE in the design?
In my opinion, the background of the cover, with its patterns and shadows creates visually engaging negative space, which complements the central figure of Coraline and adds depth and the sense of mystery to the overall composition.
7. Who do you think the AUDIENCE for the work is and what’s the purpose of it?
I think the audience for book cover primarily targets individuals interested in dark fantasy, surrealism, and whimsical storytelling. The design appeals to readers who appreciate narratives with mysterious and eerie elements, making it suitable for fans of Neil Gaiman’s novel, “Coraline.” The purpose might be to captivate the target audience and prompt them to explore the mysterious world in the pages of the novel.
8. Are there any CONSISTENT qualities to the work?
To my mind, yes. The illustrator includes surrealism, detailing, muted color palette, symbolic imagery and the balance in composition, which contributes to his recognisible artistic approach.
9. Do you think the work COMMUNICATES any messaged or ideas?
Yes, the "Coraline" book cover effectively communicates a mysterious and unconventional narrative through its eerie elements, like Coraline's button eyes, and the dark, muted color palette.
10. What do you think are the LASTING qualities?
The lasting qualities of the "Coraline" book cover stem from its timeless and captivating design, featuring surreal illustrations, a muted color palette, and memorable symbolic elements like Coraline's button eyes.
